Interest in the eagerly-awaited A MILLION WALLS is already huge!
A MILLION WALLS is the story of a young boy growing up in post-Taliban Kabul. Fawad makes money hustling foreigners in Chicken Street while his widowed mother cleans houses. For Fawad and his friends, Jamilla and Spandi, liberation means little more than easy dollars as thousands of internationals swarm into the city bringing promises of reconstruction, security and a better future. But when his mother unexpectedly gets a live-in job in Kabul’s plush Wazir Akbar Khan suburb, Fawad finds that not only are the white faces dizzyingly rich but also pretty decent for unbelievers. And though they seem unable to cook or clean for themselves, their friendships are true and their hearts are good. Living with Georgie, James and May, Fawad becomes embroiled in a world full of fun, secrets, love affairs and curious habits. He also finds himself employed by a blind man, mixing with some of Afghanistan’s most powerful, and falling for a goat-comber. And as he grows more accustomed to the strangers that come to play such a huge role in his life, Fawad’s confusion melts into acceptance, and ultimately love, as his innocence is swept away, and his inherent optimism challenged, within the increasing chaos of a country struggling to find peace.

FRAGMENT

Fahy, Warren

Fiction-Thriller

Foundry Literary + Media US HR

This début environmental thriller can probably be best compared with JURASSIC PARK by Michael Crichton
What if the first cataclysmic alien invasion of the planet Earth came not from space, but from Earth itself? When the cast and crew of reality show “Sealife” land on unexplored Henders Island in the South Pacific, they quickly discover that it’s no Blue Lagoon. Henders has evolved in extreme isolation, an island dense with the most vicious and exotic predators imaginable. Every plant and animal lives in a lightning fast blur of kill or be killed. The cycle of life and death is so harsh on Henders that most animals actually breed in the womb and are born pregnant. One thing is obvious: if any of these creatures ever made it to the mainland, life as we know it would change quickly and dramatically. Simply put, life would end.
Steven Spielberg Production company has an exclusive look at the novel at the moment but virtually every big movie studio is interested. Film rights are being handled by Jared Hoffman at Generate.

QUIRKOLOGY: The Curious Science of Everyday Lives

Wiseman, Richard

Non-Fiction-Body, Mind, Health & Spirit

jogtulajdonos:
Conville & Walsh Ltd UK HU
Conville & Walsh Ltd UK HR

QUIRKOLOGY is now #9 in the WH Smith list, and Fischer in Germany are having a huge success with it. The sales are extremely good here and the marketing campaign is thought to be the most successful ever in book history. Plus Richard's website continues to prove itself an invaluable tool: www.quirkology.com (I would urge you to have a go at the colour card trick video yourself - it's great fun).
Some facts and figures: the mass-market paperback was released to coincide with a 20 part TV series that the BBC have just run, and which Richard put together. On publication of the hardback in May, Amazon were selling about 200 copies a day, and Macmillan reporting re-orders in the region of 50-100 day from the shops. The last time we got the sales figues, which was in the late summer, they had sold about 15,000 in hardback - in just a few months.
Google Richard's name, for instance, and you'll find some 22,000 mentions of his work... alongside which, he has also developed a lucrative career lecturing to business groups both here and in the States. On the book front, two successful self-help titles - THE LUCK FACTOR and DID YOU SPOT THE GORILLA? - which have now also sold on into 27 languages.
So a great platform for this new direction to his writing career, allied to a wonderfully clever and original project. Certainly QUIRKOLOGY is one of those rare books that makes you smile before it makes you think, and is packed full with the sort of dinner party nuggets that will ensure it enjoys word-of-mouth success.

NOW YOU SEE HIM

Gottlieb, Eli

Dramas-Dramas

jogtulajdonos:
Harper Collins Publishers US HU

"Now You See Him is a true literary page-turner in which string of startling revelations unfolds within in constructs of lush and beautiful prose. It is at turns both heartbreaking and breathtaking." - Ann Patchette
A mesmerizing blend of suspense and long-buried family secrets, Gottlieb's second novel (after 1997's THE BOY WHO WENT AWAY) culminates in shocking revelations that rock a quiet upstate New York town. Nick Framingham is still reeling from the recent death of his childhood best friend, the writer Rob Castor, who committed suicide after killing his ex-girlfriend in Manhattan. Nick's own marriage to his college sweetheart, Lucy, begins to unravel as he struggles to understand what drove Rob to murder. Rekindling an old relationship with his first love, Belinda, Rob's volatile and beautiful sister, Nick begins to retrace not only Rob's last days but also their shared childhood, looking for clues to explain his friend's actions. Gottlieb skillfully ratchets up the suspense by doling out the details of Rob's death in bits and pieces, until everything falls into place in a startling conclusion that will rattle even the genre's most experienced readers. With his pitch-perfect dialogue and flawed yet empathetic characters, Gottlieb's sophomore effort should win him widespread recognition.
In this ambitious and thrilling novel, award-winning author Eli Gottlieb — with extraordinarily luxuriant and evocative prose — takes us deep into the human psyche, where the most profound of secrets are kept.

“The story of Kaala and her pack takes readers on a journey into a rich and fascinating world. A remarkable look into the mind of another kind of being.”Temple Grandin, author of Animals in Translation
At least that’s what the wolves of the Wide Valley believe... until a young she-wolf discovers the lies behind the promise—lies that could cause her own death, and the destruction of everything she holds dear.
Born of a forbidden, mixed-blood litter and an outcast after her mother is exiled, Kaala struggles to earn her place in her pack. But her world is turned upside down when she rescues a human girl from drowning. When Kaala and her young packmates begin hunting and playing with humans—risking expulsion from their pack and banishment from their home in the Wide Valley—she learns that she is the last in a long line of wolves charged with keeping watch over humans in order to prevent them from losing touch with nature and thus destroying the world. But soon war between humans and wolves threatens, and Kaala must choose between safety for herself, her friends, and their human companions and the survival of her pack—and perhaps all of wolf and humankind.
Set 14,000 years ago in what is now southern Europe, The Wolf Chronicles brings all the excitement and imagination of a mythical adventure novel ?and combines it with years of research into the world of wolves. The lives and adventures of the Wide Valley wolves will immerse you in a fantastical, complex, and spellbinding world filled with lore.

DISGUISE

Hamilton, Hugo

Dramas-Dramas

jogtulajdonos:
Rogers, Coleridge & White Ltd UK HU
Rogers, Coleridge & White Ltd UK HR

Hugo Hamilton, the internationally acclaimed author of 'The Speckled People' and 'Sailor in the Wardrobe', turns his hand back to fiction with a compelling drama tracing Berlin's central historical importance throughout the twentieth century.
Gregor Liedmann dies at the age of three in the bombing of Berlin during World War II. As his grieving mother flees south, her father Emil picks up a refugee orphan to replace her missing son. Only much later does Gregor discover that he is, in fact, a Jewish survivor. But there is no proof, and Gregor spends a lifetime in the borderlands between real and imagined origins, running away from his family, unable to keep his own marriage, travelling around the world as a musician in search of his true identity and only returning to Berlin after the fall of the Wall.
On a single day spent gathering fruit in an orchard outside Berlin with family and friends, Gregor looks back over his life, sifting through fact and memory in order to establish the truth. What happened on that journey south in the final days of the war? Why did his grandfather Emil disappear and why did the Gestapo torture uncle Max? Here in the calmness of the orchard, Gregor's former wife Mara and his son Daniel finally bring out the evidence.
In his first novel since the best-selling memoir THE SPECKLED PEOPLE, Hugo Hamilton has created a truly compelling story of lost identity, a remarkable reflection on the ambiguity of belonging and the existence behind the disguise.

THE YEAR THAT CHANGED THE WORLD: The Untold Story Behind the Fall of the Berlin Wall

Meyer, Michael

Non-Fiction-Non-Fiction

jogtulajdonos:
Simon & Schuster, Inc. US HU
Simon & Schuster, Inc. US HR

Michael Meyer, award-winning foreign correspondent and editor for Newsweek, was recently named Director of Communications for the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Between 1988 and 1992, Mr. Meyer was Newsweek's Bureau Chief for Germany, Central Europe and the Balkans, writing more than twenty cover stories on the break-up of communist Europe and German unification.
This book will not only grippingly recount the events of ’89, it will also offer needed perspective. Here’s how the author puts it in the proposal:
“The purpose of this book is not to debunk accepted history but to liberate it. Twenty years later, as a new generation arises with little or no memory of these epic events, this narrative in itself becomes invaluable. Those of us who lived that momentous year can recalibrate our memory by reminding ourselves of the more intimate dimension of 1989. Instead of being swept along by abstract, seemingly tectonic forces, as so many histories portray, this book will dramatize Eastern Europe in 1988-1989 on an infinitely more human scale, shorn of myth-making. The players in the drama—Erich Honecker, Lech Walesa and Vaclav Havel, among others—will be fully drawn, characters in the round caught in some of the most extraordinary events of the 20th Century.“
